Set in the middle of the same Chilean landscape the Incas used to call home, Hotel de Larache in San Pedro de Atacama is the perfect isolated retreat to stop at in the desert if you’re not up for staying at the type of rundown motels usually seen in slasher flicks. Quite possibly the driest place on Earth, ensuring no cities, towns or other dwellings are remotely interested in forming close by, San Pedro de Atacama is the ideal site for this long-forgotten gem.

With 50 luxury rooms, open courtyards and sweeping archways made from wood, slate and stone, it’s no wonder Hotel de Larache was named one of the 100 best hotels in the world shortly after its opening. With a soaring sun overhead, seven volcanoes and a 700-mile-long stretch of desert just outside the door, you’ll never want to return to civilization again.

Resort reward: Food at Hotel de Larache is important; not only is the Michelin-worthy restaurant to die for, but the hotel staff ensures the same quality of food is supplied on excursions (no sweaty cheese and tomato sandwiches here!), and regular get-togethers are organized round the al fresco barbecue area.

If you lived in Salvador, Brazil‘s oldest cities, for several years and Porto da Barra here, I want the morning bath or beer in the evening. The situation is impressive, at the entrance to the beautiful Bahia de Santos Everything from a small, white colonial sharp on one end and white church sitting on a hill to another.

There is always something going on here: small fishing boats unloading their catch, young men dive in the sea off the old stone walls of the port, eyeing children, older girls, beach volleyball, soccer and tennis. On the beach in the bay water is calm and even (as it directly into the heart of Brazil’s third largest city) incredibly clean and clear, making it ideal for swimming. And in a country with more than 7000 km east of the coast, Porto is one of the few in the West, so you can see some fabulous sunsets.

There has never been so impressed with the beach as soon as I was when Tayrona on the eyes. After 40 minutes walking through the forest, I was expecting to see a classic Caribbean beach, all white sand and calm turquoise water, perhaps a few cottages for tourists. Instead, he went with wild marine accident on rocks the size of houses along the untamed and semi-deserted beach. In a country with “healthy” Tayrona tourism industry will certainly be a great resource, but with Colombia in the pristine tropical forest in the Cascade mountain on the right side in the sand. And there was nobody there, except for a small community backpacking tourists, who sleep in hammocks in the air.

Upon arrival, I wandered along it, marvelling at the raw beauty and remoteness of the place, but after only 10 minutes walk to my friend Jim literally! It unlikeliest place, “You will never guess who I met in the history of travel, as well as the best beach vacation I ever had. I understand that it is becoming increasingly popular in the ten years since I was there, but thanks to his status as a national park developers kept under control.
