http://romadjepianobar.altervista.org/immagini/Costiera/Amalfi_Duomo.jpgThe town and its cathedral on the Amalfi Coast is located only a little more than 20 miles south of Naples, with good transportation both by road and efficient trains. Built in the early twelfth century, the Duomo di Amalfi (also known as the Cathedral of St. Andrew) is dramatically situated at the top of a steep and elegant flight of stairs overlooking the sea. It contains some other unique features, in addition to its location.

Entry to the Duomo di Amalfi is free, although there could be some restrictions to certain areas during feast days and religious services. There is an entry fee for the cloister and the neighboring museum. Many of the Amalfi hotels in the city center are within walking distance. If a car is your transportation, you’ll find a metered parking lot down the hill on the seafront that is just across the street from the entrance to the cathedral square.

http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/00/17/b9/c0/tombs-of-the-kings.jpgThe Tombs of the Kings in Paphos got its name from early antiquarians who were so impressed by the architectural designs that they saw fit to award the site with a special name. Residents of the ancient city of Nea Pafos used the Tombs of the Kings all the way up until the third century AD, after which early Christians began using them for dwellings, workshops, and even a chapel. In addition to Doric columns, some of the tombs at this archaeological site in Paphos Cyprus also feature frescoed walls. The tombs are all cut out of native rock, which is part of the reason why they are so fascinating, and the early Greek architectural styles that were employed hint at their age.

There are eight complexes that visitors can explore at the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos, and they generally require at least a couple of hours to explore. For those who don’t have time to tour all of the complexes, numbers three, four, and eight are arguably the most fascinating. Unfortunately, most of the tombs at this archaeological site in Paphos Cyprus were visited by grave robbers before major excavations began, so there aren’t tons of artifacts to take in. It’s the site itself that is the main attraction, and exploring the ruins gives visitors a true sense of history.

http://www.globusjourneys.com/Common/Images/Destinations/delphi-ruins.jpgThe Oracle of Delphi was the main reason pilgrims visited Delphi Greece. The oracle, which is believed to have originated in the late Mycenaean period (1600-1000 BC), was the most powerful oracle and the most important source of wisdom in Greece during the Classical period (5th and 4th centuries BC). The Delphi Oracle was extremely influential, consulting on a range of issues from religion and fortune telling to politics and war. The priestess of the Oracle of Delphi was known as the Pythia, and it was through her that Apollo spoke. The priestess sat on a tripod over a chasm in the ground and spoke in riddles which were often unintelligible and were translated by priests. The exact location of the chasm has not been found, but it is believed to be somewhere within the Temple of Apollo.

Visitors to Delphi Greece can visit two museums: the Delphi Museum, which houses many of the treasures and artifacts from Ancient Delphi; and the Sikelianos Museum, which features classical costumes and masks from Greek Dramas.
