From bushwalks beneath the planet’s tallest tree ferns to barbecues overlooking spectacular ocean cliffs, there is something for everyone.

Norfolk Island also holds important biological significance as its flora and fauna are derived from the chance dispersal of plants and animals over vast distances of ocean. Many species have evolved into unique, or endemic, forms due to isolation from other populations and having different evolutionary pressures.

Discovered by Captain James Cook, it was claimed by him for Great Britain and named in honour of the Duchess of Norfolk. Cook’s crew were struck by the island’s rugged beauty and the abundance of flax and pine.

Cook sailed on, and the island was to remain uninhabited for a further 14 years. Since then the island has seen two penal settlements come and go, the second of which was the most brutal ever established by Britain.

In 1856 the island received those who call it home to this day – the Pitcairners, descendants of the Bounty Mutineers. During the intervening 140 years these people have nurtured the island to make it a prosperous, tranquil and beautiful place. Thousands of people from all over the world now come to experience the history, beauty and unique Pitcairn culture that make Norfolk Island a paradise on Earth.

However, paradise is threatened…

This site, created by Norfolk Island’s Society of Pitcairn Descendants and jpwebworks, explores the history of Norfolk Island from its formation millions of years ago to its beauty today, and outlines the struggles of its indigenous population – fighting against a bloodless genocide.

Holidays on Norfolk Island feel like you have been isolated from the rest of the world. The buildings have colonial architecture, a heritage from its English ancestors.

On Norfolk Island you will not find any railways, port or harbours, or even any busy roads for that matter. There are eighty kilometers of lane ways across the island and cows still have the right of way. When supplies come by ship, jetties on either side of the Island are used to send small boats out to the bigger ships to ferry in 5 tonnes of supplies at a time.

Located between Australia, New Caledonia and New Zealand, the symbol for Norfolk Island is the pine tree and this features on the territory’s flag. Visitors to Norfolk Island can find ruins left over from convict settlements, over 170 native plants and ferns, and several types of sea birds that come to the island to breed.

Traditional Norfolk clothing has a colonial theme and most family names are English. Not all ancestors of the current Norfolk people are English, some ancestors were Polynesian. Visitors will notice a strong Polynesian influence on Norfolk Island, as seen in the local cuisine and the hula dance.

A number of ancient Roman statues might lie beneath the turquoise waters of the Blue Grotto on the island of Capri in southern Italy, according to an underwater survey of the sea cave.

Dating to the 1st century A.D., the cave was used as a swimming pool by the Emperor Tiberius (42 B.C. – 37 A.D.), and the statues are probably depictions of sea gods.

“A preliminary underwater investigation has revealed several statue bases which might possibly hint to sculptures lying nearby,” Rosalba Giugni, president of the environmentalist association, Marevivo, told Discovery News.

Carried out in collaboration with the archaeological superintendency of Pompeii, the Marevivo project aims at returning the Blue Grotto to its ancient glory by placing identical copies of Tiberius’ statues where they originally stood.

Celebrated for the almost phosphorescent blue tones of the water and the mysterious silvery light flowing through fissures in the rocks, the Grotta Azzurra, as the cave is called in Italian, is one of the top attractions in Capri.

The island was the capital of the Roman empire between 27 and 37 A. D., when Tiberius made a permanent home there to take advantage of the mild climate and its seclusion.

Dividing his time among 12 villas and orgiastic feasts, the emperor used to bath in the almost hallucinogenic blue light of the cave, swimming among naked boys and girls.

The story goes that those who displeased him were thrown into the sea from a rock near his Villa Jovis. Perched 1,000 feet above the sea with Mount Vesuvius’s cone in the distance, this was the most magnificent of his residences on the island.

The Blue Grotto might have been equally amazing. In 1964, archaeologists recovered three statues from the sea bottom. One sculpture depicts the sea good Neptune, while the other two statues each represented the Greek god Triton, who was the son of Poseidon (Neptune, for the Romans).

According to the archaeologists, the position of the Tritons’ shoulders (the arms are missing) would suggest that the marine creatures were blowing into large seashells as if they were trumpets.

Triton was known to carry a twisted conch shell, on which he blew to calm or raise the waves.

The recovered sculptures confirmed an account by Roman scholar Pliny the Elder (23 A.D. – 79 A.D.), who described the sea cave as populated by a Triton “playing on a shell.”

Now on display at a museum in Anacapri, the three statues have provided a glimpse of the original setting of the Blue Grotto.

According to the reconstruction, a swarm of Tritons headed by Neptune might have lined the rocky walls of the cave. Bathed in the magic light of the grotto, the statues stood with waters at their knees.

During the Marevivo survey, aimed at finding the original bases of the three statues, divers found a total of seven bases at a depth of 150 meters (492 feet). This suggests that at least four other statues lie on the cave’s sandy bottom.

“The sculptures were all placed at the same level. It is likely that other statues will come to light as the project continues with new underwater investigations,” diver Vasco Fronzoni told Discovery News.

The Grotta Azzurra’s reputation as a natural paradise was seriously threatened last month. The cave was closed twice due to fears that its waters had been contaminated by raw sewage.

Aimed at returning the grotto to its full ancient glory, the Marevivo project is also expected to pave the way to a more strict controls to preserve the natural wonder.

“By next summer, tourists to the Grotta Azzurra will enjoy a really unique experience,” Giugni said.

The multi-location Nikki Beach may be a commercial venture, but it makes our list because it strikes the near-impossible balance of entertaining the elite without excess fanfare. Here, celebrities don’t have to disappear into roped-off areas or otherwise distance themselves. Everyone recognizes them, but everyone’s cool about it and is respectful. More than a few famous guests have even mingled among strangers without incident. And yes, Nikki does have a location in Miami, but it’s a different vibe. Stick with the international outposts and you won’t be disappointed.

Its unicity does it in value a place on our list, however. The Litvinov millisecond is one of the best boats available ones, and after having been completely refourbi in 2002, it now offers the roomy fuselages, which have large windows. All the meals are provided on board, with a bar and an abundance of the activities and entertainment. Traveling during 12 days on board this ship four stars, you will appreciate (although non spectacular) comfortable housing. All the rooms are the fuselages external with equipment of then. It is a relatively small ship, with the part for approximately 124 passengers, but this provides the occasion sufficient to end up really knowing the similar travelers. The voyage itself is interesting, because it starts in Berlin, of the voyages by Dresden and incorporates some of the palates and the gardens the most opulent baroques in Europe.
