The Karnak Temple is unique not only among Egyptian temples, but also among religious sites throughout the world as it is the largest ancient religious site in the world, also often considered the largest open-air museum in the world. Unlike many Egyptian temples, Karnak was not constructed by a single pharaoh or even during a single time period. Construction began in the sixteenth century BC and continued for over 1,300 years. Approximately thirty different pharaohs contributed to the complex, adding temples, pylons, chapels, or obelisks all devoted to the gods of Thebes. Among the contributing pharaohs were Thutmosis I, Seti I and Ramses II, whose tombs are located in the Valley of the Kings and all of whom now rest at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Temple of Karnak features a light and sound show every evening, which reviews the history of Thebes, the religious center of Egypt during a large portion of Egyptian history, as well as facts about the Egyptian temples at Karnak and the pharaohs who built them. The show runs in several languages; check a schedule for times and what language the show will be in.

Agadir Beach is a crescent-shaped beach, and its golden sands extend for no less than five and a half miles. Families and single females alike might prefer the nearby beaches of Sunset Beach and Palm Beach, as they are private beaches.

One of the things that helps to make Agadir travel so appealing is the side trip possibilities. Tourists can also enjoy many cultural traditions, palm trees and eucalyptus forests.

Unfortunately, the cleanliness of the water is suspect, so swimming and surfing are not recommended. Some good beach bars can be found along the sand, and many boast changing facilities, showers, and some deck chairs that can be ideal for kicking back and relaxing.

Tangier is also home to a lot of restaurants that can satisfy a range of budgets. Thanks to the city’s rich history and its mixing of cultures, dining out is one of the top things to do in Tangier. Hanging out at the cafes is also popular, and as can be expected in Morocco, strong coffee and mint tea are often the drinks of choice.

Whatever you do during your Praslin getaway, it’s imperative that you make an attempt to visit Anse Lazio, which is considered by most to be the king of the Praslin beaches. Thankfully, getting to Anse Lazio beach is quite easy, really. Once visitors arrive on flights to the main island of Mahe, it’s just a short boat, plane, or helicopter ride to Praslin Island.

Bemaraha National Park is located to the north of the reserve and is the point of access for most tourists interested in exploring the tsingy, a Magalasy word referring to the needle-like karst limestone formations that make the park such a popular tourist trek. The most famous attraction of Tsingy de Bemaraha is the park’s namesake, the mineral forest of limestone formations known as tsingy. The scenery at Bemaraha National Park is dramatic, with hundreds of needle-like karst peaks interspersed with lush pristine rainforests.

Tristan da Cunha is the world’s most isolated inhabited island.

Around 270 people (the population does not vary much over the years) make a living on the only inhabited island of four essentially from growing potatoes and exporting crayfish tails.

There’s no jetty or proper harbor, landing is done through the surf by longboat and it isn’t unknown for a visiting cruise ship to not be able to land any passengers at all for days.

If you’d like to know more about the islands then I suggest this book. Written by a man who was Governor of the islands for three years in, I think it was, the 1960s. It’s a good overview of both what life is like (or at least was those few short decades ago) and of the history of the settlement. Be warned though, while interesting, it’s not about to win any literary awards.

Another fun book is this one, looking at the various remnants of the British Empire. Essentially, now reduced to those places that could not make it on their own, like Tristan da Cunha and various other islands, and places which don’t want to, like Bermuda.

To give you an idea of how little is written about the place, the last entry on Google News was this one, from yesterday. And that’s the Times of Tristan da Cunha keeping an eye on what the rest of us are saying about them. The article before makes this comment:

the older citizens—some of whom still speak in an old-fashioned manner with “thee”s and “thou”s—call “the houtside warl.”

One of the strangenesses is that the Tristan accent is closely related to that of the Falklands and of St Helena, each thousands of miles away. And all three are closely related to an archaic form of an English West Country accent. Your humble correspondent once phoned up the newspaper in the Falklands (long story as to why) and the accent on the other end of the line transported him to the back room of a pub in deepest darkest Dorset, talking to those who had been born there 90 years before.

But then this isn’t all that unusual, that places connected only by the sea (Tristan and St. Helena have no air contact with the outside world at all still) should have the accent, suitably varied, of the ports that connect them.

taken from:

Although it’s a mere 2.8 miles off the eastern tip of Zanzibar, Mnemba Island is about as far from civilization as you’re ever likely to feel. Every vista here looks like a shot from a honeymoon brochure, with 10 romantic beachside lodges each with their own verandas overlooking the sea, untouched white beaches, shimmering blue waters, and the type of glowing sunsets only ever seen in the movies. The island is just one mile in circumference, with a conservation barrier that protects the coral reefs, giant turtles, ghost crabs, and tropical fish that surround it. It’s no wonder it was voted one of the top three most romantic islands in the world by trusty Condé Nast. Walk barefoot along the shore in your linen trousers, indulge in fresh fruit for breakfast and fresh lobster for dinner, enjoy a spot of windsurfing, deep-sea fishing or kayaking, and sink into crisp linen sheets all in one day at Mnemba Island.
